There’s a perfect environment now to implement the rule of law without any compulsion – acting IGP
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya says a new culture has emerged in Sri Lanka. This was said during the ceremony to establish a new building at Chunnakam Police Station, Jaffna.
“The current government has informed me to treat the law equally to everyone and enforce the law equally to everyone. I have told all the officials about this directive. The most unpleasant period after the election is the post-election period.
We called it the post-election period of violence. But something different than that happened after the last presidential election. A new culture was born in Sri Lanka. For this, the community, as well as the appointed government and the advice given to us, were responsible. Also, earlier, the power given to the entire police force to enforce the law was found not to be properly implemented. If we cannot enforce the law, it is our weakness. It is a weakness of the law enforcement agency and the leaders. Therefore, we have got a good government that has created an excellent environment to implement the law without any influence,” said the Acting Inspector General of Police.
