The Moth Project at Tranzac Main Hall Friday, Oct 20, 8 to 10 p.m. at Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick Ave. is a mesmerizing 75-minute multimedia show about and inspired by moths - stunning visuals and diverse music performed by Grammy nominated producer Peter Kiesewalter and violinist Whitney La Grange. Film screening of “Steadfast: The Messenger and the Message” Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Film screening begins at 7 p.m., followed by Q & A at Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd. The Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine is a Canadian icon who broke barriers and fought for social justice. Be inspired by this documentary film capturing Dr. Augustine’s journey from her humble beginnings in Grenada, West Indies, to her numerous achievements and accolades after immigrating to Canada in 1960. Film screening is followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Jean Augustine and Director Fahim Ali, hosted by Director of Museum & Heritage Services, Cheryl Blackman. Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra – Landmarks and Beacons Concert Friday, Oct. 20, 8 to 10 p.m. at Martingrove Collegiate Institute, 50 Winterton Dr. The season opener features soloist, Andrew Wan, concertmaster of Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, performing the Beethoven violin concerto. The violin concerto is recognized as a beacon lighting the way from the Classical era to the subsequent Romantic era. You’ll also hear Sibelius' landmark Second Symphony, dubbed the “Symphony of Independence” by those who connected its grandiose finale with Finland’s struggle for freedom from Russia. Ukrainian Student and Alumni Collective is presenting its first exhibition, Eclectic Ukrainian Futures, from Oct. 19 to 26 in the Great Hall at the Rosalie Sharp Centre for Design, located at 100 McCaul St. The exhibition will showcase more than 26 artworks from OCAD U students and alums, aiming to bring the diverse perspectives, creativity and talent of the OCAD U community to the forefront, while celebrating Ukrainian culture. A charitable auction and closing reception taking place on Oct. 26 is being organized in collaboration with the Canada-Ukraine Foundation and will donate 50 per cent of its proceeds to the AID for ARTISTS fund. This fund supports artists, arts workers, arts organizations, arts institutions and artist advocates to improve the preservation, promotion and development of Ukrainian arts in Ukraine. More info.

Exhibition Place is hosting Friday evening ghost tours throughout October (continuing Oct. 13, 20, 27), starting at 7 p.m. These two-hour tours are led by Steve Collie of After Dark Tours. Due to the nature of the walk, this tour is not suitable for children under 10 years of age. There is also some rough terrain. Price is $15 with all proceeds from the Ghost Walks going to United Way. The “Art on Sneaker” High School Invitational is being held at the Scarborough Town Centre, Centre Court Saturday, Oct. 21, 1 to 5 p.m. Forty aspiring teen artists between the ages of 16-19 will have the chance to showcase their creativity and technical skills. Each artist will have 45 minutes to craft their unique concept, expressing the themes of growth and community. The event will feature two rounds of competition and all sneaker creations will be evaluated by a panel of judges including experts from JD, PLC, Reebok, and STC. Three winners and five additional finalists will be selected based on storytelling, colour selection, and the cleanliness of their artwork. The three winners will receive cash prizes and all finalists will participate in a one-day workshop hosted by PLC, OCAD, and Reebok. Following the workshop, the artists will get to apply their knowledge to create an entirely new "Art on Sneaker" concept. The winning concept will be put into a limited production run by Reebok in 2024 for friends and family, alongside MARTK’D and JD Sports.
Sinfonia Toronto will open their 25th anniversary season with a concert entitled "Beethoven's Fifth!" Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, 8 to 10 p.m. at George Weston Recital Hall, 5040 Yonge St. The program will celebrate the orchestra’s tradition of presenting newly commissioned works contrasted with Classical and Romantic favourites. In addition to Sreten Krstič's faithful rendering of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony for Sinfonia Toronto's Chamber instrumentation, two world premieres and one Canadian premiere will be presented, plus the virtuosic Zigeunerweisen, “Gypsy Airs" performed by star violinist Elisso Gogibedaschwili. Ukrainian Student and Alumni Collective is presenting its first exhibition, Eclectic Ukrainian Futures, from Oct. 19 to 26 in the Great Hall at the Rosalie Sharp Centre for Design, located at 100 McCaul St. The exhibition will showcase more than 26 artworks from OCAD U students and alums, aiming to bring the diverse perspectives, creativity and talent of the OCAD U community to the forefront, while celebrating Ukrainian culture. A charitable auction and closing reception taking place on Oct. 26 is being organized in collaboration with the Canada-Ukraine Foundation and will donate 50 per cent of its proceeds to the AID for ARTISTS fund. The Queer Tamil Collective’s Oor Exhibition, hosted at the Scarborough Museum, explores the question of belonging when faced with the fractures of displacement through war, colonialism, caste violence, and queerphobia. Follow the journey of six Canadian infantrymen as they experience the anticipation and hardships of war. Every year ImagineNATIVE Film Festival collaborates with established and local artist-run galleries in the downtown Toronto area to present national and international exhibitions featuring Indigenous artists who continue to push the boundaries and expectations of what Indigenous storytelling is. This year, the festival has partnered with the Art Museum at the University of Toronto and their current exhibition, The Children Have to Hear Another Story by Alanis Obomsawin. Running through to Nov. 25, this international travelling retrospective showcases the work of the artist’s decades-long career and highlights the work she has done to amplify the voices of Indigenous communities that have historically been silenced. Through to Oct. 31, Halloween Nights of Lights is a thrilling, immersive walk-through experience, various times available at Scarborough Town Centre, 500 Progress Ave. Continue the fun inside of Pumpkinville, a fun fair located at the end of the Nights of Lights trail featuring larger than life pumpkin sculptures and village. Both events run Thursdays to Sundays, through to Sunday, Oct. 29, and are then also open Monday, Oct. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 31. Nights of Lights is open 6:30 to 11 p.m. Pumpkinville is open 5 to 11 p.m. except on Saturdays and Sundays when it opens at noon. Some pet friendly dates are available. Native Earth Performing Arts presents the 36th edition of 'Weesageechak Begins to Dance' Nov. 6 to 19, 2023 with in person performances at Aki Studio in Toronto and free online programming. Towards Home, an exhibition exploring the concept of home from the perspectives of Arctic Indigenous designers, opens Oct. 25 at the Daniels Architecture and Design Gallery, running until March 22, 2024. The exhibition showcases installations by Indigenous designers and artists that explore how Arctic Indigenous communities relate to land and create empowered spaces of belonging. The exhibition is an important first step towards welcoming and understanding Indigenous design in the canon of Architecture. More info.
Toronto-based artist Bryan Espiritu returns with his first solo exhibition in over 12 years with Passage, Oct. 27 to Dec. 21 at Cultural Goods Gallery, 1444 Dupont St., Unit 15. Passage is an amalgamation of Espiritu's original poetry and paintings that delve deep into the intricate channels between the rational adult mind and inner child, exploring how each attempts to process, rationalize, and recollect experiences of trauma, pain, and isolation.
