An audit inquiry has questioned the non-recovery of more than Rs. 30 million due to the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority as a result of the intervention of the Minister of Power, Kanchana Wijesekera. Rs. 35,050,000 was to be collected by the authority as registration fees for 700 MW renewable electricity projects. Of that amount, Rs. 5,050,000 had been recovered on April 06, 2022, under the former minister. But after Kanchana Wijesekera was appointed as the power minister, the remaining amount of Rs.30 million was not recovered. Apart from that, it was estimated that 467-megawatt solar power would be generated in the year 2022. However, under the current minister Kanchana Wijesekera; only 175 megawatts of that estimate has been completed. Due to this situation, it has become clear that there is an opportunity to buy electricity from private diesel power plant owners at a very high price.
