To relinquish Mahinda’s sins…
The UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Commission) proposals regarding Sri Lanka have come to be imposed on the current President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, as a result of the continuous political repression carried out during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime.
Despite the war ending in May 2009, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime failed to establish a truth commission within a short period. Because of the lack of justice and fairness to the victims, accusations of human rights violations against Sri Lanka have continued for 15 years since then.
However, the government of the current three-member National People’s Power (NPP) believes that justice should be served to the victims through a local mechanism. The NPP’s conduct throughout its existence and also during the present election campaign has totally rejected communalism and condemned human rights violations. It thrives on an atmosphere of equality, which has vastly deterred communalists and other extreme forces.
Anura Dissanayake’s government, with a three-minister cabinet, is only a few weeks old. A general election to elect members for the Parliament is only a few weeks away, in which the NPP hopes to build a strong government. People who have voted for the NPP would definitely expect their government to do justice to all those who deserve justice.
