Princess Leonor, the 20-year-old daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, stands at the centre of Spain's modern monarchy as the heir presumptive to the throne.

Princess Leonor, the 20-year-old daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, is the heir presumptive to the Spanish throne; if she ascends, she will become Spain's first Queen Regnant in nearly 150 years, and underwent military training across the armed forces.
If she ascends, Leonor will become Spain's first Queen Regnant in nearly 150 years, ruling in her own right rather than alongside a king. Her future accession would mark the first such moment since Queen Isabella II reigned in the nineteenth century, making her role historically significant for the Bourbon dynasty and for Spain itself.
Although there is no fixed timeline for her coronation, Leonor is expected to take the throne when King Felipe VI either abdicates or passes away, setting the stage for a generational shift within the royal family.
Early life and royal education
Born on October 31, 2005, in Madrid, Princess Leonor is the elder of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia's two daughters. Her younger sister, Infanta Sofía, was born in 2007. As Princess of Asturias, Leonor has been raised from birth with the understanding that she will one day lead the Spanish monarchy.
Her education reflects this responsibility. She studied at Santa María de los Rosales School in Madrid, the same institution attended by her father. She later moved to the United Kingdom to complete the International Baccalaureate programme at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, where she focused on global affairs, constitutional studies, and international perspectives.
Leonor is fluent in several languages, including Spanish, Catalan, English, French, Arabic, and Mandarin. At just 13, she delivered her first major public speech during the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony, an event named in her honour that recognises achievements in science, culture, and the humanities.
Military training and preparation for command
Under Spanish law, the future monarch must undergo military training across all three branches of the armed forces. Princess Leonor began this mandatory preparation in August 2023 with the Army in Zaragoza, marking the start of a carefully structured journey toward her future role as commander-in-chief.
In 2024, she advanced to naval training in Galicia, which included serving aboard the historic training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. During this deployment, Leonor sailed approximately 17,000 miles across the Atlantic and later stopped in New York as part of the voyage. She also spent time aboard the Spanish Navy warship Blas de Lezo.
Her military milestones continued in December 2025, when she flew solo in a Pilatus PC-21 aircraft, becoming the first female royal to achieve this distinction. The experience underscored the monarchy's emphasis on discipline, readiness, and leadership.
Public duties and a carefully managed profile
Alongside her education and military commitments, Princess Leonor has gradually taken on official duties. These include state visits to Portugal and engagements in the Chartered Community of Navarre. While her public appearances remain limited, each one is designed to familiarise her with constitutional responsibilities and national representation.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia have deliberately maintained a balance between public visibility and privacy for their elder daughter. This approach reflects their effort to prepare Leonor for a future defined by scrutiny, while allowing her a degree of normalcy during her formative years.
With her father's royal lineage and her mother's background in journalism, Princess Leonor represents a new generation of European royalty. As Spain looks ahead to a historic transition, she has already emerged as one of the most closely watched Gen Z royals on the global stage.
