No one has the right to stand aside at this moment – Anura Dissanayake
“In this specific political moment, no citizen of this country has the right to stand aside and say, ‘We are independent.'” says Anura Dissanayake, the leader of the National People’s Power speaking to the BBC.
He aid, “We have faced an issue about children’s future in this country. That issue is a political issue that needs to be resolved precisely. We need to make a political transformation for the children. Then, don’t parents have any role to play in such a political transformation? Don’t the teachers in this country have no role to play? Don’t the police, public servants and journalists have no responsibility? There definitely is. It is not a contract taken over by politicians. Our country now has an opportunity where the whole society needs to stand up with determination to get out of this crisis. Otherwise, this country cannot recover from this crisis.
Everyone should make a sacrifice to get out of this crisis. However, the politician should make that sacrifice first. Ranil Wickramasinghe cannot make that sacrifice. Then, can he tell the citizens to make sacrifices? As such, a new awakening should be created where people with a firm determination dedicate themselves to build this country. We are ready to provide the necessary political leadership to do that. I think Sri Lankans abroad who have knowledge, ability and assets will intervene in building this country in the first step, and we have faith that they will take the initiative.
That beginning is essential for us as a country. Nevertheless, the country cannot be taken forward on that alone. The crisis cannot be resolved without support from our foreign friends.
We should consider India, China and Japan as our closest friends. We need their support. We must go to a very strong open transaction. Go for an open deal with no hidden, under-game.
The future political battle is the conflict between the politics of the corrupt aristocratic regime and the politics of the ordinary people. No one can say, “We are independent; We don’t want anyone; All are the same.’ No one has the right to believe that both are the same. Either one should stand up for the protection of that corrupt aristocratic regime, or they should advocate for the politics of the ordinary people. The conflict between these two is the future political conflict. Therefore, at this point, no citizen of our country can say that “we are independent and we are standing aside,” says Anura Dissanayake.
