China Slams US For Imposing 100% Tariffs, Calls It Double Standards

China has the United States for what calls "arbitrary double standards" following President Donald Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on Chinese imports and new port fees on Chinese vessels. This move, announced on Truth Social, is one of the most significant protectionist measures of Trump's presidency. He accused China of taking an "extraordinarily aggressive position on trade," prompting a reciprocal response from the US.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry expressed strong disapproval, stating that these actions severely damage China's interests and harm the environment for bilateral economic and trade discussions. The ministry described the US decision as a "classic case of double standards" and indicated that China is prepared to take countermeasures if necessary. They emphasised that while China does not seek conflict, it is not afraid to respond.

Trade Tensions Escalate

President Trump declared that starting November 1, the US would impose a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports, in addition to existing tariffs. He condemned China's planned export restrictions on various products as "a moral disgrace." This announcement follows Beijing's recent decision to tighten export controls on rare earth elements, crucial for global tech manufacturing. Trump accused China of trying to "hold the global economy hostage" with this move.

Analysts have raised concerns that these new tariffs could disrupt industries ranging from consumer electronics to electric vehicles, which are already under pressure from previous trade measures. The timing of this announcement is notable as it comes just weeks before a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. However, Trump has threatened to cancel this summit, and Beijing has yet to confirm its occurrence.

China's Response

The Chinese Commerce Ministry highlighted that since recent trade talks in Madrid, the US has consistently introduced new restrictions against China. These include adding multiple Chinese firms to export control and sanctions lists while expanding the scope of regulated entities arbitrarily. The ministry urged the US to correct its practices promptly and support stable development in China-US economic relations.

In retaliation, Beijing announced plans to impose special port fees on US-linked vessels, describing it as a "necessary defensive action" against Washington's latest penalties. The ministry warned that if the US continues its current approach, China will take corresponding measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
