Developing estate schools is a primary educational objective of the government, stated Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
She made these remarks while attending the Estate School Development Workshop organized for Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS) officers at the Department of Examinations on September 17, 2026. The workshop was aimed at identifying the challenges and development priorities faced by estate schools in conducting learning-teaching activities, as well as formulating action plans for their progress.
During the workshop, officers were briefed on launching new development projects, drafting project proposals in accordance with the National Planning Department (NPD) framework, and implementing government initiatives focused on vocational education and health promotion. Proposals and feedback were also gathered to ensure effective implementation at the ground level.
Furthermore, attendees were updated on Cabinet-approved projects aimed at developing estate infrastructure, including housing construction for teachers, new buildings for 34 schools, and retaining/protective walls for 23 schools. Strategies addressing teacher shortages, capacity-building programs, and student welfare initiatives were also emphasized.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted that the government firmly believes the Malaiyaha Tamil community must advance across all sectors, noting that SLEAS officers play a crucial role in achieving this goal. She added that plans are underway to recruit a higher number of Tamil-medium teachers from estate regions. To support this effort, teacher training colleges in these areas will be upgraded, with the development of the Kotagala Teachers’ Training College serving as a key priority.
Directors from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, along with education service officers serving in estate regions, were present at the event.
