Talatha’s Fall Further Marginalizes Shattered Opposition: Sajith, Ranil, and Rajapaksas Driven to Ruin

The fractured opposition has been plunged into further helplessness due to the recent intervention made by former Minister of Justice Talatha Athukorala, who spearheaded efforts to manage extremist factions against the government.

The court ruling regarding Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero was implemented in strict accordance with prison regulations and laws. Drawing parallels to a similar action taken by the prison authorities in June 2018, Talatha Athukorala held a press conference last week where she deliberately distorted even the official statements issued by her own tenure as the Minister of Justice and Prisons.

Using that press conference as a pretext, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by Sajith Premadasa, the United National Party (UNP) led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)—the political party of the Rajapaksa family—jointly organized a protest march from Kandy to Colombo.

However, the march has now completely failed, proceeding entirely without any public support.
