“Groups That Enjoyed Privileges Under Old Regimes Are Now Panicking” – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake

Speaking at a massive public rally held yesterday (21) in Akuressa under the theme “Two Years of Our Government – Prosperous for the Nation,” President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that the current government was formed to drive a genuine social transformation, not to continue down the old path.

“We formed this government for a system change. We have already stepped into many sectors—making significant progress in some while identifying key priorities in others. However, groups that enjoyed privileges, perks, and special rights under former governments are now panicking,” the President stated.

Key highlights from the President’s address:

Unprecedented Mandate: The government currently holds executive power, a historic parliamentary majority, and control over local councils. However, true authority relies on strong public support rather than raw political power alone.

Crackdown on Corruption & Crime: The public demanded accountability for corruption and an end to underworld drug networks. As the government turns rhetoric into action, corrupt elements and underworld-backed groups are attempting to unite out of fear.

Rule of Law & Equality: For the first time in Sri Lankan history, no one is above the law—demonstrated by former leaders being brought before the courts. Judicial reforms are underway to ensure swift justice without long delays.

Social Welfare & Economic Relief: Despite global challenges, the government is shielding the public by subsidizing fuel and electricity costs. The upcoming budget will allocate a record LKR 2,000 billion for capital expenditure and include relief measures such as:

Doubling allowances for teacher trainees at the Nilwala College of Education.

LKR 5,000 monthly bank deposits for children in development centers, along with an LKR 2 million housing grant when they reach age 21.

Increased Mahapola higher education support and kidney disease allowances.

Democracy & Freedom: The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic freedoms, media expression, and open public discourse without state suppression, while encouraging media organizations to act responsibly.

The President concluded by stating that public confidence in the government has grown significantly over the past two years, fulfilling the trust voters placed in the administration.
