IMF Issues Crucial Statement on Sri Lanka’s Economy; Highlights Resilience and Key Reforms

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that the Sri Lankan economy continues to demonstrate resilience despite facing periodic economic shocks.
According to a statement issued by the IMF, economic activity expanded by 4.2% in the second quarter of 2026, marking the eleventh consecutive quarter of robust growth. Furthermore, official foreign exchange reserves rose to US$ 6.9 billion by the end of August 2026.
However, the IMF warned that risks persist due to uncertainties surrounding the duration and intensity of Middle East conflicts, global trade policy developments, and the potential impact of El Niño. To maintain macroeconomic stability in a vulnerable environment, the Fund emphasized the need for cautious policies and an unwavering commitment to structural reforms.
Key Priorities and Recommendations Highlighted by the IMF:
Revenue & Tax Reforms: A primary priority is formulating and implementing a medium-term revenue strategy by broadening the tax base, streamlining tax exemptions and incentives, and strengthening revenue administration to ensure sustainable revenue growth.
Inflation Targeting: Sri Lanka should maintain its current 5% inflation target along with existing accountability frameworks, noting that this target provides necessary flexibility amid volatile food and energy prices.
Anti-Corruption Framework: Protecting the integrity and strength of the anti-corruption legal framework is essential to maintaining public trust. The IMF cautioned that certain clauses in recently proposed amendments could weaken transparency and accountability.
Economic Transformation: Sri Lanka must now transition from economic stabilization to broader economic transformation through structural reforms aimed at improving the business environment and attracting investment. Recommended measures include trade liberalization, modernizing business and labor regulations, expanding access to finance, and accelerating digitalization.
