Asian Workers Dominate Kuwait’s Domestic Labour Market, with Sri Lankans Ranking Second
October 18, Colombo (LNW): Asian workers make up the overwhelming majority of Kuwait’s domestic workforce, with four nationalities accounting for 86.1 per cent of all employees in the sector, according to figures published by the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI).
The data records a total of 883,308 domestic workers in Kuwait, of whom 760,744 are Indian, Sri Lankan, Filipino or Bangladeshi nationals. The figures underline the significant contribution of migrant workers from South Asia and South-east Asia to the country’s household and domestic services sector.
Indian nationals form the largest group, with 344,532 workers, representing approximately 39 per cent of the total. Their numbers place them comfortably ahead of other nationalities employed in domestic work across the Gulf state.
Sri Lankans occupy second place, with 157,901 workers accounting for 17.9 per cent of the workforce. Their presence highlights the continued importance of Kuwait as an overseas employment destination for Sri Lankan nationals seeking opportunities in the domestic services industry.
Filipino workers rank third, numbering 151,369, or 17.1 per cent of the total. The difference between the Sri Lankan and Filipino communities is relatively small, with fewer than 7,000 workers separating the two groups.
Bangladeshi nationals complete the top four, with 106,942 workers, equivalent to 12.1 per cent of Kuwait’s domestic workforce.
Combined, these four communities represent more than eight in every 10 domestic workers in the country. The remaining 122,564 workers, accounting for approximately 13.9 per cent, come from other nationalities.
The figures illustrate the extent to which Kuwait’s domestic services sector depends on migrant labour, particularly from Asian countries. They also demonstrate the prominent position held by Sri Lankan workers, whose numbers place them among the largest national groups in the sector.
For Sri Lanka, the data highlights the continuing significance of overseas employment in the Gulf region, where domestic work remains an important source of income for thousands of migrant workers and their families back home.
