October 18, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has dispatched a further 218 security personnel to Haiti to reinforce its contribution to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) mission, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The latest group, which left the island on October 16, comprises 173 Sri Lanka Army personnel and 45 members of the Police Special Task Force (STF). Their deployment forms part of the country’s continuing involvement in international efforts to address security challenges in the Caribbean nation.

The departure follows an earlier deployment on October 14, when 280 Army personnel, including 21 officers and 259 other ranks, travelled to Haiti. The successive movements reflect Sri Lanka’s ongoing commitment to supporting the multinational security initiative.

Personnel assigned to the mission are expected to join their fellow Sri Lankan troops already operating in Haiti. Their duties include conducting patrols using armoured vehicles and safeguarding important supply routes, activities aimed at strengthening security and facilitating the movement of essential goods.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Army has also extended assistance to a 50-member Bangladeshi contingent travelling through Sri Lanka on its way to the same mission.

The Bangladesh personnel arrived on October 15 and have since received accommodation, meals, transport and other necessary facilities provided by the Army. The assistance was described as a gesture of goodwill, reflecting cooperation between the two countries as they contribute to the international effort.

Sri Lanka’s latest deployment and its support for the visiting Bangladeshi contingent highlight the logistical coordination and regional partnerships underpinning participation in overseas security operations.
