China Sets 18-Month Target to Rebuild Nine Disaster-Damaged Bridges in Sri Lanka

November 02, Colombo (LNW): China is preparing to undertake a major infrastructure reconstruction initiative in Sri Lanka, with nine bridges scheduled to be rebuilt within the next 18 months under a special emergency assistance programme following recent disasters.

The Chinese Embassy in Colombo confirmed the timeline, emphasising that the reconstruction work would prioritise structural strength, public safety and high construction standards to ensure the bridges remain reliable for years to come.

The announcement follows the commencement of construction work on the first bridge under China’s Emergency Post-Disaster Reconstruction Assistance Project, marking the beginning of a wider effort to restore damaged transport infrastructure across the island.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the Embassy noted that roads and bridges play a vital role in connecting communities, supporting commercial activities and facilitating economic development. Damage to such infrastructure can disrupt daily travel, affect livelihoods and create difficulties for businesses and residents, particularly in areas dependent on reliable road access.

The reconstruction programme is therefore expected to help restore essential transport links while improving connectivity for communities affected by natural disasters.

The Embassy also expressed confidence that the project would contribute to strengthening Sri Lanka’s infrastructure resilience and support the gradual recovery of economic activities in affected areas.

Describing the initiative as another demonstration of the longstanding relationship between the two countries, China reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with Sri Lanka across various sectors.

The Embassy further highlighted the importance of strengthening the China-Sri Lanka Strategic Cooperative Partnership, while recalling the historical significance of the Rice and Rubber Pact, which has long served as a symbol of friendship and economic cooperation between the two nations.

With nine bridges expected to be reconstructed within the stipulated timeframe, the project is anticipated to provide lasting benefits to communities by restoring vital transport connections and supporting the country’s post-disaster recovery efforts.
