An interesting contest appears to be brewing for the 2029 Presidential Election.

An Interesting Contest Brewing for 2029

An informal poll conducted by the webpage among a sample of its readers has produced some interesting numbers. While the results are not scientific or conclusive, they provide an interesting snapshot of the mood among this particular group of respondents and raise questions about where public sentiment could be heading.

The illustrative figures show a particularly close contest at the top:

  • Anura Kumara Dissanayake – 34%
  • Rajiv Amerasuriya – 33%
  • Sajith Premadasa – 13%
  • Harsha de Silva – 12%
  • Namal Rajapaksa – 5%
  • Dilith Jayaweera – 3%

The most striking feature is the narrow one-percentage-point gap between Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Rajiv Amerasuriya in this informal sample.

For comparison, at the 2024 Presidential Election, the first-preference results were:

  • Anura Kumara Dissanayake – 42.31%
  • Sajith Premadasa – 32.76%
  • Ranil Wickremesinghe – 17.27%
  • Namal Rajapaksa – 2.57%
  • Dilith Jayaweera – 1.70%

The 2029 figures should therefore be viewed purely as illustrative poll figures, rather than a scientific opinion poll or an indication of the eventual election outcome.

Nevertheless, they make for an interesting discussion. If similar numbers were to emerge from broader and scientifically conducted surveys, Sri Lanka could be heading towards a very different and potentially highly competitive presidential contest in 2029.

For now, it is simply one informal poll — but an interesting one to watch.
