July 30, Colombo (LNW): The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board (AAIB) has designated August as Pig Insurance Month, launching a nationwide awareness campaign to encourage swine farmers to enrol in a newly introduced insurance scheme designed to protect them against losses caused by African Swine Fever (ASF) and other risks.
The initiative follows recommendations made by the Presidential Task Force to strengthen Sri Lanka’s pig farming industry, which has faced significant challenges due to the spread of ASF. Authorities hope the insurance programme will help farmers recover more quickly from disease outbreaks while improving the long-term resilience of the sector.
According to the AAIB, the campaign will focus on increasing awareness of the benefits of insuring breeding pigs, particularly among commercial producers and small-scale farmers. The scheme also extends to breeding animals kept at commercial pig farms registered with the Department of Animal Production and Health.
The insurance policy provides financial protection against the death of pigs resulting from African Swine Fever, accidents and a range of other recognised swine diseases. Breeding pigs aged between six months and four years are eligible for annual cover, with compensation of up to Rs. 200,000 per animal.
Officials have encouraged pig farmers to take advantage of the programme to safeguard their livelihoods against unexpected losses.
