Construction Begins for New Cardiology Unit at Trincomalee District General Hospital Under President’s Patronage

The construction of a new Cardiology Unit at the Trincomalee District General Hospital commenced yesterday morning (16) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The initiative aims to provide comprehensive and modern cardiac care services under one roof for the residents of the Eastern Province.

The project, valued at LKR 2,403 million for construction, is implemented under the Health and Medical Services Improvement Project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with financial assistance from the Government of Japan to strengthen cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment facilities.

The 8-storey Cardiology Unit building will feature state-of-the-art operation theatres, outpatient departments (OPD), inpatient care facilities, and fully equipped laboratories. Construction is scheduled for completion around May 2028.

President Dissanayake unveiled the commemorative plaque to mark the commencement of construction and engaged in a cordial discussion with the hospital staff.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated:

“In September last year, we visited this location and promised to initiate the work on this cardiology unit as quickly as possible. We expect to complete the construction of this project by May 2028.

Today, foundation stones are being laid for four major construction projects under the leadership of the President. Earlier this morning, the foundation stone was laid for an Accident and Emergency Care Unit at the Mannar District General Hospital, built at a cost of LKR 600 million under Indian grant assistance. Overall, this complete project, including equipment, is valued at LKR 4,185 million—with LKR 2,403 million allocated for construction and LKR 1,782 million for procuring medical equipment.

Furthermore, this afternoon, the foundation stone will be laid for a 4-storey medical ward complex at the Mullaitivu Hospital costing LKR 600 million. Additionally, a foundation stone will be laid for another cardiology unit valued at over LKR 3,000 million at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. In total, today marks the addition of around LKR 7,100 million in constructions and nearly LKR 12,000 million worth of facilities including equipment to the country’s health sector.”

The ceremony was attended by local religious leaders, Minister of Health and Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Eastern Province Governor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera, regional public representatives, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha, government officials, Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka Office Shigeo Honzu, as well as the hospital director and staff.
