The amount of public debt has increased by 7 billion dollars within the first three months of this year, states The debt report issued by the Ministry of Finance. The total domestic debt in Sri Lanka has increased from 40.123 billion dollars by the end of last year to 46.900 billion dollars by 31 March 2023. During that time, foreign debt increased from $35.976 billion to $36.090 billion. As such, in three months, the Ranil Wickremesinghe government has obtained a total loan of nearly 7 billion dollars. Daily borrowings averaged $76.2 million. Instead of being mentioned in rupees in the official data, it has been referred to in dollars due to the uncertain exchange rates.
