Dengue Cases Climb Across Seven Provinces Amid Persistent Rainfall

November 01, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is witnessing a rise in dengue infections across seven provinces, with continuing rainfall creating favourable conditions for mosquito breeding, health authorities have warned.

Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr Kapila Kannangara, said an increase in infections had been recorded in the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Northern, Eastern and Central Provinces.

He further revealed that mosquito larvae populations had reached concerning levels in approximately 130 Divisional Secretariat divisions, raising fears of further transmission if immediate preventive action is not taken.

In response to the developing situation, authorities are preparing an intensified mosquito-control campaign covering 13 districts from 9 to 14 November. The programme will focus on identifying and eliminating breeding grounds, alongside measures to raise public awareness about dengue prevention.

Official figures indicate that Sri Lanka has recorded approximately 105,500 dengue cases so far this year, with 79 deaths attributed to the disease. The latest increase has prompted renewed calls for greater vigilance, particularly in areas experiencing frequent rainfall and water accumulation.

The National Dengue Control Unit has urged households, businesses and public institutions to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings free of stagnant water, where dengue-carrying mosquitoes can multiply.

Residents have also been encouraged to inspect rooftops, drains, discarded containers, flower pots and other places where rainwater may collect.

Health officials have stressed that government-led fogging and mosquito-control operations alone will not be sufficient to contain the outbreak without active public participation. Regular inspections and the timely removal of potential breeding sites remain essential to reducing the risk of further infections.
