July 13, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is continuing to witness a sharp rise in dengue infections, with the total number of confirmed cases reported so far this year increasing to 68,672, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

Health officials said the country recorded 601 new cases within a single day, with the cumulative total rising from 68,071 reported as of 11 July. The steady increase has reinforced concerns over the spread of the mosquito-borne disease, particularly during the current high-risk period.

The Western Province remains the worst-affected region, accounting for more than half of all reported infections this year. A total of 36,118 cases have been recorded in the province, with Gampaha District reporting the highest number at 14,112, followed closely by Colombo District with 13,791 cases.

The upward trend has continued into July, with 13,293 infections reported during the first 12 days of the month alone. June remains the most severe month of the year so far, when authorities documented 21,538 cases, highlighting the sustained transmission of the disease across several parts of the country.

The National Dengue Control Unit has also confirmed that 47 dengue-related deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Health authorities continue to urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, maintain clean surroundings and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headache or body aches develop.
