District-Level Committees to Tackle Human-Elephant Conflict
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed the immediate formation of district-level committees to provide urgent and sustainable solutions to the long-standing human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka.
During a special discussion held this afternoon (20) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on rural communities and the national economy. He stressed the need for structured, long-term strategies and called for swift implementation of programmes designed to reduce incidents and protect both people and wildlife.
Underscoring the importance of accountability, President Dissanayake directed that each district must appoint a dedicated committee of responsible officials within the next month. These committees will be tasked with coordinating local efforts, ensuring timely responses, and maintaining close engagement with affected communities.
