August 20, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is preparing to invest approximately US$1.878 billion in a major programme to electrify railway services across the country over the next three years, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena told Parliament today (20).
The proposed investment is expected to support a broader modernisation of the island’s rail network, with electrification aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of passenger services while reducing reliance on conventional diesel-powered operations.
Gunasena said the Maradana–Ragama railway corridor would be among the routes earmarked for electrification under the planned programme.
The initiative is expected to form part of wider efforts to upgrade Sri Lanka’s ageing railway infrastructure and provide faster, cleaner and more dependable transport options for commuters.
