Government Rejects Claims of Diaspora Funding for NPP Election Campaign
September 15, Colombo (LNW): The Government has dismissed allegations made by Parliamentarian Ramanathan Archchuna that the National People’s Power (NPP) received financial backing from the Tamil diaspora for its election campaign, describing the claim as unfounded.
Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said authorities were prepared to pursue legal action over statements he characterised as false.
Addressing questions from journalists, Jayatissa said the Government would not ignore allegations that could potentially mislead the public or damage the reputation of political institutions.
The Minister was also questioned about remarks reportedly made by Archchuna at an SLPP political rally in Anuradhapura, which have been alleged to constitute promotion of the proscribed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Jayatissa said complaints concerning the incident had already been submitted to both the Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
He said the relevant authorities would investigate the circumstances surrounding the remarks and determine whether any offence had been committed.
The Minister added that any further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigations and the applicable law.
