India Sends Third Batch of Bailey Bridges to Support Sri Lanka’s Post-Cyclone Recovery
August 09, Colombo (LNW): India has delivered a further consignment of Bailey bridges to Sri Lanka as part of ongoing assistance to rebuild road infrastructure damaged by Cyclone Ditwah.
The latest shipment, weighing more than 250 metric tonnes, was handed over on August 8, according to the High Commission of India in Colombo. The delivery forms part of New Delhi’s US$450 million package announced to support Sri Lanka’s post-disaster reconstruction efforts.
The Ministry of Transport said the latest consignment comprises five modular Bailey bridges with a combined value exceeding US$5 million. It follows two earlier deliveries of similar bridge components from India aimed at helping restore road links disrupted by the cyclone.
Indian Army engineering personnel are also expected to work alongside Sri Lankan authorities during the recovery operation. Their role will include assisting with the assembly and installation of the modular structures at locations where existing road connections have been severely affected.
The bridges are expected to provide temporary but crucial links in areas where damaged crossings have disrupted the movement of residents, goods and essential services.
