Nationwide Mosquito Control Campaign Launched as Dengue Cases Continue to Rise
July 27, Colombo (LNW): Health authorities have commenced a special islandwide mosquito control campaign today in conjunction with National Integrity Week, as efforts intensify to curb the growing spread of dengue across Sri Lanka.
Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the initiative is being jointly implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Clean Sri Lanka programme. The campaign is scheduled to run until July 31 and will focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and raising awareness about dengue prevention.
As part of the initiative, a nationwide dengue control drive will be conducted at all government institutions on July 31. The activities will be coordinated through operational committees established within public sector organisations, with officials expected to inspect premises, remove potential breeding grounds and encourage greater participation in disease prevention measures.
Health authorities have urged public institutions and local communities to actively support the campaign, stressing that sustained public involvement remains essential in reducing mosquito populations and limiting the spread of the disease.
The campaign comes as Sri Lanka continues to record a sharp increase in dengue infections. According to the NDCU, 81,511 cases have been reported across the country so far this year, while the disease has claimed 61 lives.
Gampaha District remains the worst-affected area, accounting for 21.7 per cent of all dengue infections reported nationwide, underscoring the need for intensified vector control and public health interventions in high-risk locations.
