August 01, Colombo (LNW): The planned arrival of Scope Cinemas at The Shoppes in City of Dreams Sri Lanka is expected to intensify competition within Sri Lanka’s entertainment industry while reinforcing the growing role of mixed-use developments in attracting consumer spending beyond traditional retail.
Scheduled to open before the end of 2026, the five-screen multiplex will occupy Level 10 of The Shoppes and include two VIP cinema halls with private lobbies and gourmet dining facilities. Developers say the complex will introduce advanced cinema technologies and immersive viewing experiences that are currently unavailable in the local market.
The investment comes at a time when shopping destinations across Asia are increasingly relying on entertainment-led strategies to drive visitor numbers. Internationally, cinemas, family entertainment centres and live event venues have become critical components of retail developments seeking to compete with online shopping and changing consumer behaviour.
Within Sri Lanka, the partnership reflects a similar shift. Rather than positioning The Shoppes solely as a retail centre, developers are expanding its appeal through lifestyle experiences that encourage longer visitor stays and higher overall spending.
According to Colombo Hotels Senior Vice President and Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams Sri Lanka General Manager Kamal Munasinghe, the inclusion of Scope Cinemas aligns with the project’s long-term objective of integrating shopping, dining and entertainment into a single destination capable of attracting repeat visitors.
Scope Cinemas Chairman and CEO Naveed Cader said the company aims to establish a cinema experience combining international technology standards with premium hospitality, creating what he described as a new benchmark for movie-going in Sri Lanka.
The multiplex announcement also coincides with the next phase of The Shoppes’ expansion. While Levels 7 and 8 are already operational, future phases will introduce additional retail outlets, a waterfront ground floor, a food court and expanded nightlife attractions, significantly increasing the destination’s overall footprint.
Developers recently demonstrated their emphasis on experiential entertainment during the Sri Lankan premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where invited guests witnessed the country’s first Spider-Man-themed drone show. The event highlighted efforts to position The Shoppes as a venue capable of hosting large-scale public entertainment alongside conventional retail activity.
However, the long-term success of the investment will depend on several factors, including consumer purchasing power, tourism growth and the broader recovery of Sri Lanka’s leisure sector. Premium entertainment facilities typically require sustained visitor volumes to justify substantial capital investment.
Nevertheless, the partnership between Scope Cinemas and The Shoppes represents a significant commercial development within Colombo’s expanding lifestyle market. By combining premium cinema experiences with retail, dining and hospitality, the project reflects a broader transformation in how entertainment is increasingly becoming a key driver of modern commercial developments in Sri Lanka.
