July 23, Colombo (LNW): Leaders of several opposition political parties are due to meet this afternoon to deliberate on the Government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of judges, a move that has sparked debate over its potential implications for the country’s judicial system.
The meeting has been convened by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who invited representatives of all opposition parties to participate in discussions at his office. The gathering is expected to bring together a broad cross-section of political leaders to formulate a common position on the proposed reforms.
Former Presidents Ranil Wickremesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena are also expected to attend, while an invitation has been extended to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), reflecting efforts to broaden the discussion beyond individual party lines.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) General Secretary and Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the primary objective of the meeting is to examine the possible impact of the proposal on judicial independence and the broader administration of justice. He noted that the opposition considers the issue to be one of significant constitutional and public importance.
According to Madduma Bandara, opposition parties believe it is necessary to engage in a collective discussion in light of recent government initiatives that they argue could have consequences for democratic governance and the separation of powers. He added that the meeting is expected to explore possible parliamentary and legal responses should a consensus be reached among the participating parties.
The proposed extension of the judicial retirement age has become a key topic of political discussion in recent days, with opposition parties expected to outline their position following the conclusion of the talks.
