Parents Urged Not to Delay Treatment as Severe Dengue Cases Among Children Increase
July 26, Colombo (LNW): Health officials are calling on parents and guardians to seek prompt medical attention for children who develop a fever lasting longer than 24 hours, as hospitals continue to see a rise in serious dengue infections.
Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Consultant Dr. Pradeep Rathnasiri, said around 50 children diagnosed with dengue are currently undergoing treatment at the country’s largest paediatric hospital. He revealed that nearly one in four of these patients is in a critical condition and requires close medical supervision.
Dr. Rathnasiri warned that delaying treatment could significantly increase the risk of complications, stressing that early diagnosis and timely medical care remain essential in improving recovery outcomes for children infected with the mosquito-borne disease.
He also cautioned that if the current increase in admissions continues, hospitals may come under additional pressure, raising concerns over the availability of beds and other healthcare resources needed to manage severe cases.
The warning comes as dengue infections continue to rise across Sri Lanka. According to the National Dengue Control Unit, 61 dengue-related deaths have been recorded nationwide so far this year, prompting health authorities to renew calls for the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and remain vigilant for symptoms of the disease.
