Colombo (LNW): Police have fired water cannons to disperse a protest organised by the Socialist Youth Union (SYU) near Town Hall in Colombo.

The event was organised by the SYU in remembrance of the “Black July” riots in 1983, and the protesters were marching from Hyde Park towards the Viharamahadevi Park at the time of the attack.

The Police have informed that SYU member Eranga Gunasekara and JVP former MP Bimal Ratnayake cannot be allowed to march in the protest. Police teams and teams from the Riot-Control Unit of the Sri Lanka Army were deployed to disperse the protest.
