September 15, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka Police are stepping up islandwide traffic operations targeting motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with increased scrutiny of vehicles considered particularly vulnerable to causing serious road accidents.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera said instructions had been issued to traffic officers throughout the country to strengthen checks and take appropriate action against offenders.
The decision follows an assessment of fatal and serious road crashes recorded on a daily basis. Police analysis has identified several recurring factors behind major collisions, including drink and drug-driving, dangerous behaviour on the road and driving while severely fatigued.
As part of the intensified enforcement campaign, officers will pay particular attention to tipper trucks, heavy lorries, three-wheelers and passenger buses.
Senadheera said police had already detected cases involving bus drivers and conductors allegedly operating vehicles after consuming drugs. Several suspects had been arrested and produced before court, while proceedings had also been initiated to suspend their driving licences.
Police are also turning to the public for assistance in identifying dangerous drivers, particularly those operating passenger buses.
Members of the public are being encouraged to report buses involved in excessive speeding, dangerous driving, racing against other vehicles or suspected drug-impaired driving. Where possible, complainants should provide clear video evidence showing the vehicle and its registration number.

The traffic authorities said information supplied by the public would be examined and legal action taken where offences are established. Senadheera stressed that enforcement would apply equally to all offenders, irrespective of their position or status.
Police say the expanded campaign is intended not only to punish dangerous driving but also to deter behaviour that continues to contribute to deaths and serious injuries on Sri Lanka’s roads.
