Red Alert Issued for Severe Winds and Hazardous Seas Around Sri Lanka’s Coast

July 30, Colombo (LNW): The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be very rough at times with strong gusty winds up to (60-70) kmph.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas, until further notice, the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology said in a “Red” warning statement today (30).

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Hambantota Via Colombo, and Galle will be rough at times with strong gusty winds up to (50-60) kmph.

The wave height may increase about (2.0 – 2.5) meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
