Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage Seals Historic Budapest Triumph With 91.09m
September 14, Colombo (LNW): Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has brought another extraordinary chapter to his breakthrough season, capturing the men’s javelin title at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 26 with a spectacular 91.09-metre throw.
The Sri Lankan’s winning effort, delivered in the final round on Sunday, not only secured the championship but also made him the first athlete to surpass the 90-metre mark in Hungary.
Pathirage entered the Budapest showdown in formidable form, having won 11 of his previous 12 competitions. His season has included victories at the Diamond League Final, where he produced a world-leading 92.62m in Rome, followed by another impressive 92.07m winning throw in Zurich.
However, the road to victory in Budapest was far from straightforward. Pathirage opened with a modest 75.89m, allowing Germany’s Julian Weber to take the early lead with 84.09m. Grenada’s Anderson Peters then strengthened his position with an 86.18m effort in the second round.
Pathirage answered with 85.69m before finding further distance in the third round, sending the javelin 87.11m to move ahead of the field.
Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, meanwhile, recorded a season-best 81.49m but failed to make the top four after the opening three rounds.
With the pressure at its peak, Pathirage produced his decisive throw. Going first in the final round, he unleashed 91.09m to establish a commanding advantage and leave his challengers with no realistic route back into contention.
Peters ended the competition with 82.63m, while Weber’s final attempt reached 78.75m.
Reflecting on the victory, Pathirage said winning the trophy for Sri Lanka had been his overriding objective despite the difficulties he encountered during the contest.
The latest success has also sharpened the javelin star’s long-term ambitions. With Sri Lanka having secured two Olympic medals in its history, Pathirage now has his sights firmly set on becoming the country’s next Olympic champion.
His message after Budapest was clear: the ultimate target is Olympic gold and the opportunity to bring that medal home to Sri Lanka.
