August 23, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka is stepping up efforts to bring the management of its shark fisheries further in line with international conservation and fisheries requirements, amid growing concerns over the protection of vulnerable shark populations.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources has launched a programme focused on improving oversight of shark fishing and strengthening controls on the handling and trade of shark-related products.
The initiative was discussed at a recent meeting chaired by Ministry Secretary Dr B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, with Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Susantha Kahawattamahathaya and other officials taking part.
Officials said sharks are generally not the primary target of Sri Lankan fishing operations, but are frequently caught incidentally by multi-day fishing vessels. Some species and their legally approved products, including fins, gills, jaws and skins, are permitted for export and provide a source of foreign currency for the country.
At the same time, the authorities acknowledged the conservation challenges surrounding the trade. A number of shark species face serious threats internationally, making effective monitoring and responsible fishing practices increasingly important.
Sri Lanka has already imposed restrictions on the capture and trade of protected shark species and has introduced measures to prevent prohibited varieties from being landed or exported. The authorities are now looking to build on those safeguards.
The new programme is expected to place greater emphasis on monitoring catches, improving regulatory enforcement and ensuring that any permitted exploitation does not undermine the long-term health of shark populations.
Officials said the objective is to strike a balance between protecting marine ecosystems and maintaining legitimate fisheries and export activities, while ensuring that Sri Lanka’s shark-related practices remain consistent with international standards.
