August 27, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has offered further assistance to Nepal as the country grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods that have claimed lives and caused extensive damage.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath spoke by telephone with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal to discuss the unfolding situation and convey Sri Lanka’s willingness to support relief and recovery efforts.
During the conversation, Minister Herath said Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centres would work in close coordination with the relevant Nepalese authorities to determine what assistance is most urgently needed following the disaster.
Posting on X, Herath reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s support for Nepal, describing the country as a close friend and neighbour and stressing Colombo’s continued solidarity at a time of crisis.
The telephone discussion comes as Nepal remains engaged in large-scale rescue and relief operations following the deadly flooding. The disaster has resulted in loss of life, while homes, infrastructure and communities have suffered widespread damage.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has also conveyed Sri Lanka’s sympathy to Nepal, expressing deep sorrow over the deaths caused by the floods and extending condolences and solidarity to those affected.
The President further assured Nepal that Sri Lanka is prepared to contribute to rescue efforts and assist with clearance operations as the country begins responding to the destruction caused by the floods.
Sri Lankan authorities are expected to remain in contact with their Nepalese counterparts as the scale of the emergency becomes clearer and any specific requirements for assistance are identified.
