September 29, Colombo (LNW): Lieutenant General Joel “JB” Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC), arrived in Colombo on Tuesday (29), beginning a three-day official visit aimed at expanding military cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka.
The visit, scheduled to continue until 1 October, is significant as Vowell is the most senior US Army officer to visit Sri Lanka, according to the US Embassy in Colombo.
During his stay, the senior US military official is expected to hold talks with leading members of the Sri Lankan military on ways to deepen defence ties, improve operational readiness and enhance interoperability between the two forces.
The discussions are expected to cover forthcoming joint exercises, professional and capacity-building programmes, as well as cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations.
US Ambassador Eric Meyer said the visit demonstrated the expanding security relationship between Washington and Colombo, adding that closer military engagement could strengthen the two countries’ ability to respond collectively to crises and contribute to security in the Indian Ocean region.
Vowell is also scheduled to engage with Sri Lanka’s emerging military leadership, where he is expected to discuss the contribution of professional armed forces to regional stability and security.
The visit follows the US-Sri Lanka Land Forces Talks held in May and forms part of Washington’s broader military engagement across the Indo-Pacific.
Vowell was commissioned as an infantry officer after graduating from the University of Alabama in 1991. His military career has included assignments in the United States, Europe, the Pacific and the Middle East, as well as multiple operational deployments.
He served on three combat tours in Afghanistan and two in Iraq, including during the US troop surge campaigns. Among his command appointments were the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment and the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
His previous senior positions have included Deputy Commanding General for Operations of the 25th Infantry Division and Deputy J5 for Strategy, Plans and Policy at US Indo-Pacific Command.
Vowell also served as Commanding General of US Army Japan/I Corps (Forward) before taking command of the Combined Joint Task Force responsible for Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria.
He currently serves as Deputy Commanding General of US Army Pacific at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.
