August 01, Colombo (LNW): Authorities have imposed an indefinite police curfew across three Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions within the Ragama Police area following a renewed outbreak of violence in the vicinity of the Mahara Prison complex.
Police announced that the restrictions came into force with immediate effect and apply exclusively to the GN divisions of 246 Kendaliyadda Road West, 246C Kendaliyadda Road North and 181G Dambuwa, all of which surround the prison. Officials said the measure was introduced to restore public order and prevent further disturbances as security operations continue.
The latest unrest unfolded after tensions reportedly escalated inside Mahara Prison during the evening, triggering a major security response. As the situation deteriorated, a large fire broke out inside one of the prison buildings, sending thick smoke into the surrounding area and prompting emergency services to respond.
Initial reports indicate that several inmates sustained injuries during the incident. Seven individuals were admitted to Ragama Hospital, where medical staff provided emergency treatment. Hospital sources later confirmed that one of those admitted had died from injuries sustained during the unrest, while at least six others remain under medical care.
In response to the developing situation, the Sri Lanka Air Force deployed a Bell 412 helicopter together with unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct aerial surveillance over the prison and its surrounding areas. Officials said the aircraft are being used to assist ground forces by monitoring crowd movements and providing real-time information to security personnel.
As reports of the disturbance spread, relatives of inmates and residents from nearby communities gathered outside the prison in large numbers seeking information about those inside. Witnesses stated that several gunshots were heard from within the prison compound, heightening anxiety among those assembled outside.
The gathering later became increasingly volatile after some individuals reportedly attempted to force their way through police barricades. Security personnel intervened to prevent the crowd from entering the restricted zone, leading to confrontations between officers and sections of the public.
According to reports from the scene, some members of the crowd allegedly threw stones at security forces during the clashes. Law enforcement officers subsequently intensified efforts to disperse the gathering and secure the surrounding area to prevent further escalation.
Water cannon vehicles have also been deployed outside the prison as part of the wider security operation. Authorities continue to maintain a heavy presence around the Mahara Prison complex while investigations into the cause of the disturbance remain ongoing. Officials have urged the public to avoid the affected area and comply with police instructions as efforts continue to restore normalcy.
