Vesak Message from the Jathika Jana Balavegaya (NPP)
Today, the 23rd of May, we observe Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of Lord Buddha, who was born in the 6th century BC. The religious philosophy he introduced remains vibrant and influential to this day.
Lord Buddha’s teachings, advocating principles such as nonviolence, harmony, and equality, were revolutionary in addressing the social disparities of his time. These teachings continue to offer guidance in our current socio-economic climate, which often fosters moral and physical challenges that impede spiritual progress. Consequently, even devout Buddhists find it increasingly difficult to lead lives enriched by Buddhist values.
Despite these challenges, the teachings of Lord Buddha exhort us not to succumb to a corrupt socio-economic system but to seek a path of liberation from it. This requires not only personal resolve but also a collective social effort. Therefore, let us strive to create a socio-economic environment that genuinely reflects the Buddha’s precious teachings and fosters a national renaissance grounded in these principles.
We extend our heartfelt wishes to all Sri Lankan Buddhists celebrating Vesak and to those who are committed to embarking on this path of liberation.
