We have decided not to tolerate this system anymore – Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

“For us to survive, we must have food security. We should be able to have three meals every day. Our children should be given a good education. There should be assurance that the child will be protected at school until he comes home. There should be confidence that the child has acquired the necessary skills and values when the education is completed, that the quality of the medicine has been confirmed when he goes to a hospital, and that he gets a substantial wage when he gets a job. Nothing of this has been left for us. That is what we need to change. We should change the system that has made our basic needs difficult and oppressively burdensome. We understand that a political system needs to change. That is why I, who have never been to a political meeting and had no hope of speaking in a political meeting, am now active like you all. We have taken the decision that we will not tolerate this system anymore. We shall change it,” emphasized Dr. Harini Amarasuriya MP, National Executive Member of the National People’s Power.
She emphasized this while addressing the Puttalam District Women’s Conference held on the 23rd March.
Speaking further, Dr Harini Amarasuriya said, “We were able to introduce a new political culture throughout Sri Lanka through the “Gahenu Api Eke Mitata” conferences started in Matara. You have shown that the women of this country are ready to take the leadership of the transformation that our country needs today. We can be happy with the success achieved so far. We promise to end Kuveni’s lament, which Professor Chandana Abeyratne spoke about, which is still there today. We are ready to do justice to Kuveni, the woman who gave birth to the first ruler of Sri Lanka.
It is the relationships between us that give meaning and value to our lives. The relationships in our family, at our workplace, in the village and those human bonds and relationships are extremely important to us. It is through those that we feel safe and secure. The greatest tragedy in today’s society is the loss of that security. We are insecure economically, spiritually and in every way.
. The main reason for that insecurity is that it has become challenging to maintain the quality of the human relationship among us. Today, we struggle to catch our breath, live our daily lives somehow, and have our daily bread. That’s not life. Life has a broader meaning than that and value. We must strive to get the best we can from humanity and improve the quality of relationships around us. It is we women who give life to the world. We are the ones who create and protect the next generation. It has become a big struggle today. It is difficult for us to protect our children, family members and friends we love. It has become difficult to ensure their safety. That is where our lamentation is. That is where our lives have been made hapless. We could not give that security that comes naturally to our loved ones. We don’t believe that it is our fault that it has been prevented. In today’s socio-economic crisis, getting those basic things and securing our lives has become a challenging task. All those responsibilities have been assigned to us. We have been made to feel that all those responsibilities are burdens. That is what we need to change. We must change the system that has made our basic needs so difficult and oppressively a burden to us. We know that this political system needs to be changed. That is why I, who have never been to a political meeting and had no hope of speaking in a political meeting, am active in this way like all of you. We have taken the decision that we will not tolerate this system anymore. We shall change it.
It is not just about running for an election and changing heads. We, too, have to change. We need to understand the power within us. If we want to change this system, we, too, have to get involved. It is not by chance that you and I are here together and that we were able to fill this stage with women. We are celebrating this way because of the great sacrifice you all have made and the result of untiring work. This work will not end today. In addition to all our work, we should meet all the women in this district and take this message. We need to talk about the need to change this society. We need to bring out the strength and ability to change this society.
We also had a conference in London. Hundreds of our Sri Lankan women had come. On that day, to support those ladies in participating in that conference, a daycare was set up in the hall to take care of the children. The men were in charge of it and asked the ladies to attend the meeting. Putting up such a daycare, even for a day, requires much effort. Only those who are used to it can do it. Even the doctors who came with their wives offered to care for the children.
Today, our male comrades have accepted and are supporting us in fulfilling our social and political responsibilities. Our comrades are coming forward to share with us the burden that has been ours so far. In this women’s congregation, our male comrades have taken the responsibility of entertaining the participants. Change is happening right now.
We all have the collective feeling and purpose that if we join together for a common goal, we can take society to a better place. We have proven that all of us can go on this journey together. We have already achieved many victories and will continue to receive more. We are changing this country. We shall make this country a compassionate and just place.”
