The Coconut Tree, on Old Christchurch Road, is one of nine restaurants in the Sri Lankan Coconut Tree group where visitors will be dining by candlelight on Thursday, March 23, as electric lighting is dimmed. Ten per cent of its takings across the night will be donated to the Meth Mihira Special Education Centre, a facility in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, that cares for and educates children with special educational needs. In Sri Lanka, the home of the five founders of the group, people have been having power cuts of up to 13 hours, as markets have been disrupted due to an economic crisis. Group founder, Rashintha Rodrigo, said: “Power outs are now a regular occurrence in Sri Lanka, and, having all grown up on the island, we’re passionate about doing what we can to raise awareness and contribute. “Our Power Out Night will support Meth Mihira Special Education Centre which is often affected by the blackouts – something our team saw first-hand when we visited in February.
