The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has emphasized in a letter to the appointed President Ranil Wickramasinghe that the appointments of the Inspector General of Police and other chairpersons should be made with transparency to build public trust. The letter states that a police officer who has been accused of a fundamental rights case, any other criminal case or any illegal act is not eligible for the post of Inspector General of Police as public trust in the police is essential for the governance, protection and implementation of the law in a country. It emphasizes that the opinion of the Sri Lanka Bar Association is that public trust in the police is essential for the administration of justice and the rule of law and that the best appointment should be made by focusing on an exemplary person for the vacant position of the new Inspector General of Police. It is mentioned in the letter sent by the Bar Association that “The post of Inspector General of Police is going to be vacant from March 23, 2023. It is imperative to make the best possible appointment for the position. Public confidence in the Sri Lankan police has been seriously eroded in the last few decades. Lack of independence, politicization, police brutality, deaths in custody and lack of professionalism have all led to the breakdown of public trust in the police.
