Italian Court Approves Extradition of Ukrainian Suspect Serhii Kuznietsov in Nord Stream Pipeline Case

Italy's highest court has sanctioned the extradition of Serhii Kuznietsov, a Ukrainian national, to Germany. He is suspected of orchestrating explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines over three years ago. Kuznietsov's lawyer, Nicola Canestrini, stated that his client will be handed over to German authorities shortly after the Cassation Court dismissed a final appeal from the defence.

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which transported Russian natural gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea, was ruptured by these explosions. Russia had already halted supplies through this pipeline by late August 2022. The parallel Nord Stream 2 pipeline also sustained damage but never became operational as Germany paused its certification process just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Extradition Details and Defence Claims

Kuznietsov was apprehended on August 21 under a European arrest warrant while vacationing with his family near Rimini, a coastal city along the Adriatic Sea. German prosecutors allege that Kuznietsov orchestrated and executed the detonation of at least four bombs weighing between 14 and 27 kilograms at depths of 70 to 80 metres in the Baltic Sea near Bornholm Island on September 26, 2022.

Kuznietsov has denied any involvement in these incidents. He claims he was in Ukraine serving as an army captain during the time of the explosions. Despite this, Poland has refused to extradite another suspect linked to the case to Germany.

Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook

Defence lawyer Nicola Canestrini remains optimistic about Kuznietsov's prospects in court. "I am confident that my client will be acquitted at trial," Canestrini said. The legal proceedings will continue in Germany following Kuznietsov's extradition.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its implications for international relations and energy security in Europe. The outcome of Kuznietsov's trial could have broader repercussions for similar cases involving cross-border legal cooperation and extradition processes.
