Heads up, the Sun just threw a crazy tantrum! Scientists are saying it's the biggest solar radiation storm we've seen in like, 20 years. Usually, this activity is way above us, but this time, everyone's got a VIP seat! The Northern Lights are doing their thing in places that usually miss out. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the last time severe solar radiation storm levels were recorded was in October 2003.

So, the Sun's been acting up lately, causing this whole situation. The space-weather folks have had their eyes on it for days. Sure, the auroras look unreal, but it's serious since the experts is watching satellites, communications, and power grids for any weirdness.

The Sun recently caused the biggest solar radiation storm in 20 years, classified as an S4 event by the Space Weather Prediction Center, impacting satellites, communications, and power grids, with auroras visible in unusual locations like San Francisco and Chicago. The storm originated from sunspot area AR4341, triggered by an X1.9 solar flare, and experts are monitoring its effects for a few days.

Right now, we're in a "severe S4" solar radiation storm that's almost as bad as it gets. The Space Weather Prediction Center is saying it's the worst since '03.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, always watching the Sun, got pictures and video of a recent event.

It was an X1.9 flare, which is one of the strongest kinds of solar flares out there. X-class flares are the most intense, and the number just tells you how strong it was. This one came from sunspot area AR4341.

What's up with solar storms?

The Sun's got a messy magnetic field, like a rat's nest. As it spins and its equator goes faster than its poles, these fields get all twisted. These solar storms usually start when these fields get too stressed, snap, and then reconnect, firing off a ton of energy.

What do solar storms do to us?

If one of these storms comes our way, it messes with Earth's magnetic field, this is called a geomagnetic storm. This can cause radio issues and power failures, but also some great auroras. No one's getting hurt directly, though, because our magnetic field and atmosphere protect us from the worst parts of these storms.

Basically, solar radiation storms happen when the Sun shoots out super-charged particles. These particles zoom through space and hit Earth's magnetic field. When this happens, the satellites and stuff up high can glitch, so the atmosphere lights up with awesome auroras. S4 storms are rare, and they only show up when the Sun is super wild.

What's getting the impact? Space gadgets and high-flying stuff, like satellites, rocket launches, and polar flights, are at risk. Up north, high-frequency radio might cut out for a bit. Meanwhile, back in Anchorage, the sky was full of shimmering colors, which is quite a show.

It wasn't just Anchorage, though. Photos of the aurora came from San Francisco, Chicago, Canada, and Europe.

Like the NOAA guys said, this only happens when geomagnetic and solar radiation storms hit hard. A few months ago, in November, solar storms lit up skies as far as Hungary and Texas.

So, why do solar storms create auroras? When charged particles from the Sun crash into gases way up in our atmosphere, they release light, like curtains of green, pink, and purple. they tend to happen near the poles. But sometimes the Sun is acting up, auroras can reach everywhere. It's one of the best shows, all because of the wild relationship between Earth and the Sun.

How long will this last? Solar radiation is probably going to stay high for a few days, but it'll change as the storm does. Space weather experts are keeping an eye out and sending alerts if anything changes.
