Tarique Rahman, the BNP chairman, will be sworn in as Bangladesh's Prime Minister on Tuesday after the BNP secured a majority in the parliamentary elections, with the oath-taking ceremony held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. The ceremony, attended by international dignitaries, will follow the swearing-in of newly elected MPs, with the BNP winning 209 and Jamaat-e-Islami winning 68 seats.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman is set to assume office as Bangladesh's Prime Minister after leading his party to a decisive victory in last week's general elections.

The swearing-in ceremony of the 60-year-old leader will be held on Tuesday, marking his first term as the country's premier.

In a departure from tradition, the oath-taking will not be held at Bangabhaban. Instead, the ceremony will take place at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad complex, where President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet and members of parliament.

Oath ceremony schedule and arrangements

Officials from the Parliament Secretariat confirmed that newly elected MPs will be sworn in during the morning, followed by the cabinet oath ceremony in the afternoon. A BNP parliamentary party meeting will also be held to formally elect the party leader.

For clarity, here is the key schedule:

MPs will take oath at 10:00 am, while the new cabinet will be sworn in at 4:00 pm at the South Plaza of Parliament.

BNP leaders have stated that as head of the majority party, Tarique Rahman will officially assume the role of Prime Minister following the formalities.

International leaders to attend ceremony

Several international dignitaries are expected to attend the swearing-in. India will be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with senior officials including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Turkey's Undersecretary Beris Ekinci and Sri Lanka's Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa are also likely to be present at the ceremony.

Election outcome and political backdrop

Bangladesh held its 13th parliamentary elections on February 12 amid a fragile political climate following months of instability. The polls were conducted after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's long-standing government in August 2024.

According to the Election Commission, the BNP secured 209 out of 297 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats. The Awami League was barred from contesting the election. Voter turnout stood at 59.44 per cent.

Rahman, who will be the first male Prime Minister in Bangladesh since 1991, is set to replace interim government chief Muhammad Yunus. Following his party's victory, he also visited political rivals to exchange greetings and signal a conciliatory start to his tenure.
