Peru's Congress was poised to vote on Tuesday regarding the potential removal of interim President Jose Jeri. This comes as prosecutors investigate allegations of corruption linked to undisclosed meetings between Jeri and two Chinese businessmen. If a majority supports the motion, Jeri will be ousted just four months into his presidency, prompting the legislature to appoint a new leader ahead of national elections in two months.

The accusations against Jeri originate from a leaked report about a secret meeting in December with two Chinese executives. One of these individuals holds active government contracts, while the other is under investigation for alleged involvement in illegal logging. Jeri has denied any wrongdoing, stating that the meeting was to organise a Peruvian-Chinese festivity, but opponents have accused him of corruption.

Political Instability and Economic Resilience

Despite the political turmoil, Peru's economy has remained stable. The country's external debt to GDP ratio stood at 32% in 2024, one of the lowest in Latin America. The government has continued to welcome foreign investment, particularly in sectors like mining and infrastructure. This economic resilience persists even as Peru prepares for a general election amid public concern over rising violent crime.

Jeri is the seventh president to lead Peru in the past decade. He assumed office in October after his predecessor was removed by Congress due to corruption allegations and increasing violent crime. Now, Jeri faces removal from office by his former colleagues in Congress, who accuse him of misconduct and inability to fulfill his presidential duties.

Potential Outcomes and Political Alliances

If Jeri is removed, legislators will select a new president from among themselves to govern until July 28. On this date, the interim leader will hand over power to the winner of the April 12 presidential election. Should he be ousted, Jeri will return to his role as a legislator until July 28 when the new Congress takes office.

There remains a possibility that legislators may not vote for Jeri's removal. He has backing from the Fuerza Popular party, led by presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori. Fujimori is the daughter of a former president who was imprisoned for human rights abuses. Despite these challenges, Jeri expressed optimism about surviving the vote.

"I'm not dead yet," Jeri stated during an interview on Peruvian television Panamericana over the weekend. He insisted he would continue serving Peru until his last day in office. This crisis marks another chapter in Peru's prolonged political instability, with seven presidents since 2016.
