UNP Demands Withdrawal of Police Notice on Suspicious Wealth

The United National Party (UNP) has urged the Sri Lanka Police to immediately withdraw a recently issued public notice appealing for information regarding individuals who have suddenly acquired suspicious wealth.

In a statement issued regarding the matter, the UNP claimed that the police notice was released without proper guidelines. The party further noted that the notice contradicts standards recognized by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in the United Kingdom.

However, political and economic observers point out that individuals who have acquired assets through legitimate means have no reason to fear the police announcement.

Over the past three decades, Sri Lanka’s shadow economy has expanded drastically. Observers emphasize that accepting public complaints is a key initiative under the government’s broader program to crack down on illegal wealth and curb the black market economy.
