Direct Prosecution Power Granted to COPE and COPA to Target Public Fund Fraud

Parliament yesterday (21) approved powers to initiate direct legal action against respondents based on findings uncovered by key oversight committees – the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA).

Under this new decision, prosecutions can be filed before the High Court directly through the Attorney General or the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Investigations into financial irregularities at several state institutions have already been completed to a level where legal proceedings can be initiated. These institutions include:

National Gem and Jewellery Authority

Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital

Land Reform Commission

Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka

Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka

Lanka Sathosa

Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE)

National Savings Bank (NSB)
