Shani Abeysekara Promoted to DIG Retrospectively From 2020

Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara, former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) with retrospective effect from 2020.

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya issued the special police message regarding the promotion following approval granted by the National Police Commission on the 06th.

The Police Commission reached this decision pursuant to a ruling by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, which extensively heard an appeal filed by Shani Abeysekara challenging the denial of his due promotion to the rank of DIG. On May 13, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal directed the National Police Commission to promote him to DIG effective from August 25, 2020.

Following the November 2019 presidential election, then-Acting IGP Chandana Wickramaratne requested the National Police Commission on November 20, 2019, to remove Shani Abeysekara from the post of CID Director. The following day, the Commission decided to transfer him as the Personal Assistant to the DIG in charge of the Galle Range. At the time, he was the most senior Senior Superintendent of Police serving in the Sri Lanka Police.

Shani Abeysekara had also subsequently filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court regarding his arbitrary transfer.
