“Mihimadale Amma” (Mother of the Earth) Rests in Peace!

Dr. Visharada Nanda Malini, who immensely expanded the horizons of Sri Lankan song literature, passed away this evening (20) at the age of 80.
Entering the field as a child artist with the iconic song “Budu Sadu”, her natural talent led her to playback singing in Sri Lanka’s cinema industry with the film Ranmuthu Duwa in 1962.
Thereafter, from the early 1970s onwards, she sang patriotic songs as well as tracks dedicated to an era of social renaissance. In particular, her solo concert series in the 1980s—Sathyaye Geethaya (Song of Truth) and Pawana (The Breeze)—were widely acclaimed by critics as revolutionary milestones in Sri Lankan music history.
