The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has reported former Ministers Vimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, MP Dilith Jayaweera, former Presidential Secretary Sugeeshwara Bandara, Leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party Asanka Navarathna, and Senior Professor Mahinda Pathirana to the Court of Appeal for committing contempt of court.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the order on the 05th, concluding that the individuals concerned had committed contempt of court through statements made regarding former intelligence chief Suresh Sallay, who was detained and questioned in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reported to the court that the suspects made statements during a satyagraha held in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station against the detention and interrogation of Suresh Sallay, thereby violating the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal or Institution Act No. 08 of 2024.

Considering a detailed report submitted by the CID requesting action, the Magistrate ordered that the matter be formally notified to the Court of Appeal to initiate necessary legal proceedings. Accordingly, the Fort Magistrate’s Court has officially reported the facts to the Court of Appeal for further action against the six individuals.
