Minister Lalkaanta Drops Unexpected Bombshell: “Two Media Outlets Have Taken Over the Role of Bankrupt Opposition”

Addressing the Nilwala River Salt Barrier project, Agriculture Minister K. D. Lalkaanta slams regressive opposition tactics and calls for a mindset shift among farmers.

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation, K. D. Lalkaanta, made a striking and unexpected statement today, claiming that two popular media channels have officially assumed the role of the country’s bankrupt opposition.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony to complete the long-abandoned Nilwala River Salt Barrier project—a major development initiative left neglected for years—the Minister did not hold back his criticism of both political opponents and mainstream media practices.

Critique of Media and Political Culture
Minister Lalkaanta pointed out that while the government is actively working toward establishing an advanced political culture, opposition factions continue to engage in outdated political practices already rejected by the public. He noted with concern that two leading television channels have deteriorated to that same level, effectively acting as the voice of the opposition.

Transformational Change in Agriculture
Highlighting the government’s broader economic vision, the Minister emphasized that massive structural and technological changes are currently underway in Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector. However, he stressed that true progress can only be sustained if farmers undergo an attitudinal shift alongside these developments.

“Massive achievements are within our reach in agriculture, but alongside physical development, our farming community must also transform their mindset to embrace these new opportunities,” Minister Lalkaanta stated.
